Not really surprising news, as it’s been a well kept secret for some time, but after the perceived success of their “Surge” in Iraq it was inevitable that they might want to do the same in Afghanistan.

Of course this comes at a great risk, not just in terms of risks to individuals, but also in terms of change to strategy. British approach in Afghanistan has been vigorous, but probably more contstructive than American style.  A surge could undo some of the hearts and minds work that is so essential to the building of a peaceful nation.

We now need to wait to see what the British response will be. The Brigade earmarked for Iraq in March could well be sent to Afghanistan instead.
